Fall Tips for a Pest Free Home

As the days wind down heading into fall, most people look forward to the cooler temperatures for tailgating and relief from the summer heat. This is far from the case with insects. The falling temperature is a sign to find shelter from the cold, and oftentimes their shelter is the same place you call home.

In addition to changing your antifreeze and keeping the propane tank full to prepare for the changing season, you may consider a few tried and true ways of keeping your home pest free for the fall and winter.

Eliminate Habitat

Go around the outside of your home to check for and remove any potential habitat for potential pests. If the area is covered, has a bit of moisture and access to the ground or organic matter, chances are that it would make a suitable place for an insect to live or breed.

If you think it would make a good insect hiding spot, knock it out. Nesting spots near the home can provide the cover pests need to find access into your home through cracks and openings.

  • Clean out and around the gutters as well as the downspouts. If too much organic matter collects, then it can make for good hiding spots.
  • Make sure water can flow away from where the downspouts kick it out from guttering.
  • Get rid of junk and debris near the home, such as rocks or boards.
  • Don’t stack firewood against the house. Fiddlebacks and other spiders make good use of the space between the logs to hide and find prey.
  • Don’t let mulch lay directly against the foundation.
  • Keep trash can lids shut tight and away from the home. Insects and larger pest species like possum can make an easy meal from an open trash can near the house and make your home their own.
  • Rake leaves away from the house, so they do not provide cover for pests.

Seal Openings

Covering openings around the home is a great way to keep the heat in and the cold and pests out. Using caulking and packaged concrete to fill cracks which can lead into the home can help prevent pest infestation.

  • If possible, use storm windows instead of screens to ensure a tight seal. If you do use screens for windows or doorways, make sure that the screen is not ripped and that is seals tight within the entryway.
  • Check around openings from doors, windows and crawlways. Caulk or repair weather stripping which has gone bad.
  • Examine the foundation. Cracks can be sealed with caulking or concrete and openings around pipes and plumbing should be stuffed with steel wool to prevent mice and rats from gaining entrance.
  • Damp wood is a great way for insects to make their way into the home. Rotting wood should be replaced to prevent infestation.
